Xarelto and Low Hemoglobin: What Every Patient Needs to Know

Xarelto, a widely prescribed blood thinner, is commonly used to prevent blood clots, strokes, and other serious cardiovascular events in patients with conditions like atrial fibrillation or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). While the drug has proven effective for many, a growing number of patients are reporting adverse side effects, including dangerously low hemoglobin levels. Low hemoglobin, a condition known as anemia, can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and even life-threatening complications if left untreated.

Hemoglobin is a critical protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. When hemoglobin levels drop, the body's organs and tissues may not receive the oxygen they need to function properly. For patients taking Xarelto, internal bleeding is a known risk—and one of the primary causes of low hemoglobin. Gastrointestinal bleeding, in particular, has been frequently reported, often going unnoticed until severe anemia symptoms arise. In some cases, patients may require blood transfusions, hospitalization, or even surgery to address the bleeding source.

The link between Xarelto and internal bleeding has been the subject of numerous lawsuits and safety warnings. Unlike traditional blood thinners such as warfarin, Xarelto lacks a widely available antidote to reverse its blood-thinning effects in the event of a bleeding emergency. This makes any internal bleeding event significantly more dangerous and difficult to treat. Patients experiencing symptoms like unexplained fatigue, pale skin, or rapid heartbeat should seek medical attention immediately and inform their healthcare provider of their Xarelto use.

If you or a loved one has taken Xarelto and developed low hemoglobin levels or experienced unexplained bleeding, you may be entitled to compensation. Drug manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure their medications are safe and to adequately warn patients and doctors about known risks. When they fail to do so, legal action may be necessary to hold them accountable and secure the resources victims need for recovery.
